Karbala

Karbala is an Iraqi city and the center of Karbala Governorate, located in the Middle Euphrates region. It is considered one of the most important holy cities for Shiites due to the presence of the shrine of Imam Hussein bin Ali and his companions who were killed with him in the Karbala incident. Its population is about 900 thousand people according to 2016 estimates, making it the seventh largest city in terms of population in Iraq.

The city of Karbala is located to the south of the capital, Baghdad, and is about 105 km2 away from it. The city is 30 meters above sea level. It is located in an important location that connects it to the Saudi border via Al-Nukhaib. From the north, it is connected to the capital, Baghdad, from the south, it is connected to Najaf, and from the southeast, to Hillah.

The city is located 105 km to the southwest of the Iraqi capital, Baghdad, on the edge of the desert in the west of the Euphrates and on the left side of the Husseiniya stream. The city is located at longitude 44 degrees and 40 minutes and latitude 33 degrees and 31 minutes, and is bordered to the north and west by Anbar Governorate, to the south by Najaf Governorate, and to the east and northeast by Babylon Governorate.
